Grapple With The Fact That Arm Wrestling Is Pretty Safe

Of All The Contact Sports Out There, Armwrestling Is Safer Than Most And Not As Dangerous As You Think

I am sure you are one of the many new students of armwrestling, wondering how dangerous the ancient sport is for your body. Truth is, it is quite safe! Granted, if you are an extreme sports athlete or an ESPN 8 The Ocho Aficionado, there is a chance you will injure your elbow, wrist, bicep, or forearm.

Why Is Armwrestling Not That Dangerous?

There are a few components that make armwrestling pretty safe:

Your arm is meant for pulling:

It is a high-load, slow-moving sport:

  • When you get ready for a match, you gradually apply tension and load, while pulling against your opponent. You seldom pull against an arm that isn’t ready to armwrestle and vice versa.

Few parts are involved:

  • Except for a few fanatics of the arm-game, armwrestling is mostly your entire arm and back muscles. Less moving parts means less risk for injury.

The community is full of good people who want you to battle safely:

  • If you ever armwrestling an expert, intermediate, or an individual with armwrestling experience and they try to yank your arm out immediately, with no warm-up, there is a large chance you are armwrestling a beginner. The same kind of thing applies to white belts in jiu-jitsu (noobs can do a lot of damage to themselves and others). Most professionals do not want you to get injured — so they can continue to train with you!

You Can Prevent Danger And Injury

I have a much longer post on the elbow surgeries and types of injuries you encounter when armwrestling. Luckily, none of them are life-threatening or career-ending. However, please always ensure to warm up, ease into training, and ensure you are strong enough for a match. Cooling down from armwrestling training sessions and performing supportive care for your joints, wrists, and biceps is also critical. Ice is your best friend!
