Executing Proper Technique For Armwrestling

It Is Critical To Armwrestle Correctly To Win A Match And Protect Against Possible Injury

Proper armwrestling technique is twofold: It allows you to be more effective with your armwrestling strength, and it can protect you against injury.

Let’s break down the key components of a proper armwrestling technique to keep you strong and healthy!

Professionals Warm Up, So Should You

Going in cold to an armwrestling match is a recipe for disaster. Cold muscles aren’t ready for a pull and neither are you. Your muscles are engaged, warm, and ready to pull by warming up! You can use a partner to mock-armwrestle and slowly pull each other back and forth.

Always Pull, Never Rotate

The best way to visualize the muscular engagement of armwrestling is to close your eyes and try to visualize a one-arm chinup. What you end up seeing is a motion of pulling your singular arm towards and into your body with the bicep squeezing into your core. When you armwrestle you need to pull close into your body. If you try to rotate, you can seriously injure your shoulder.

Your shoulder Location When Pulling in Armwrestling

Your body should never flare outwards from your arm. Your arms need to be inside your shoulders, not outside of them.

What I mean is that you should have your arm’s fist almost trying to clutch your chest/heart area. It is almost like you are bringing someone in for a hug. If you flare your arm out further than a 90-degree angle of your bicep to your chest, you will significantly increase your chance of hyperextending muscles and causing injury to yourself.

Keeping Your Hand Firmly On the Hand Peg

For starters, do yourself a favor and use a legitimate armwrestling table. You need to be standing with your hand firmly planted on the hand peg to have enough leverage. Keeping your hand on the hand peg allows you to use your other arm to keep you stable and allow you to execute a move like the toproll.

Load Up To Prepare For The Fight Of Your Life

When you are heading into an amateur bout, a friendly match, or a tournament competition, as soon as you grip your opponent, you want to slowly load up your arm with weight. This means you need need to engage your shoulders, core, biceps, back, hands, and forearms to anticipate the pull. Think of the loading phase like you are flexing your arm so an individual cannot take it away from your body. Engaging muscles as the match begins helps to prevent injury and fire up the engines for a match!

For proper armwrestling technique, keep those shoulders square or closer, warm up your body, load your body for a strong pull, and grip the hand peg for leverage. If you master these fundamentals, you can move on to advanced armwrestling techniques. Stay safe, have fun, and pull hard!
