The Armwrestling Equation: Is Armwrestling Strength Or Technique?

You Want The Truth. Here It is.

I won’t keep you waiting: the answer is that armwrestling needs both. However, it’s important we break down what strength and technique bring to the table. Also, it’s important to touch on how much each matters at the beginner, intermediate, and expert levels.

The stronger truth is that pros and expert table gladiators have top-notch strength and technique to win every armwrestling match.

What Is Armwrestling Strength And Armwrestling Technique?

These two facets, like your bicep and back, work together to help you win a match.

Your strength helps you commit to a technique, and your armwrestling technique allows you to use your strength effectively.

In practice, you use your forearm and fingers to quickly perform a cupping movement (strength) and your hooking motion (technique) to move your shoulder forward and rotate your opponent’s arm towards you.

Strength accentuates the armwrestling technique.

Armwrestling Strength And Technique For Beginners

The fun part about the answer to this question is that depending on the experience level, you are going to get slightly different answers. If you are a beginner, sometimes you can act like a Dungeons & Dragons character and put your stat points all into one avenue. While this is OK at the beginner level, you will find yourself quickly behind the competition as you move up.

However, if you know how to use 90% strength and 10% technique at a local bar or pub, you will most likely smoke 99% of the guys there you challenge.

Armwrestling Strength And Technique For Intermediates

Here is when things begin to even out. At the intermediate level, you need to have a solid balance of strength and technique. At this stage, you must know armwrestling techniques proficiently. To beat the competition, you might have to focus on strength, speed, and movement execution time in conjunction with your technique.

At this point, you have to form an armwrestling identity tree: What kind of armwrestler do you want to be, and how are you going to get there?

How Much Armwrestling Strength And Technique Matters At The Professional Level

For expert armwrestling champions like Devon Larratt and Denis Cyplenkov, there comes the point where strength and technique are at such even levels here, it becomes a matter of pure technique and genetics. I have the logarithmic function on the right side here to demonstrate visually how one more unit of growth at strength or technique at armwrestling begins to put you at an upper limit that you cannot surpass. The top competition is neck-and-neck.

If you are a freak of nature, with immense strength, and have tons of armwrestling experience under your belt, there is a very good chance you are going to end up at the top.

As I have always said, please train both technique and armwrestling strength to improve at armwrestling!
