A Retired Strongman, Eddie Hall Has Left A Monstrous Impact On Strongmen Sports
In 2016, Edward Stephen Hall (Eddie Hall) lifted himself past all expectations and shook the world with a (at the time) astonishing 1,102 lbs deadlift world record in 2016. For our overseas friends, that’s an insane 500 kg deadlift.

While the 36-year-old retired strongman still sports an exceptional media personality, the days of deadlifting cars and tossing 50 lbs kegs are behind him. However, a new world of armwrestling stands before him.

Eddie Hall’s Technique And Style
We haven’t seen Eddie Hall take the center stage at an armwrestling match yet. This past October 2024, he actually tore his tricep doing a 220 lbs dumbbell press. Online forums are buzzing wondering why his most recent armwrestling training video shows him training the press.
How could Eddie hope to use an armwrestling press technique with a major injury that has only had a few weeks to heal?
While it looks like he was developing the press, it can be assumed he has a strong hook and toproll because he is a strongman who understands how his body works. However, he will be utilizing these armwrestling techniques against a similar opponent with more training, Brian Shaw.
Eddie Hall: A Quick Bio
Eddie Hall was born in Newcastle-under-lyme, England on January 15, 1988. His early childhood was marked with athleticism, as he successfully competed as a competitive swimmer during his elementary school years and high school years. By the time he was 10, Eddie Hall was spending 14 hours a week in the pool training for swimming. When he was 13, he attended the UK Nationals swimming competition for the third year in a row in 2001, winning an astounding four gold medals and one silver medal. He simultaneously set two UK records for his 13-year-old age group—50m, 100m—marking him as an exceptional swimmer.
Elite competition And Fire was in his blood from a young age
He found that competing in competitive swimming at such a young age took a lot away from his social life. In quite a rebellious fashion, he was expelled from school at 15 and subsequently began homeschooling. The next year, he started an apprenticeship at 16 to become a technician.
For those who don’t know, England commonly has tradesmen/craftsmen jobs begin as apprenticeships at 16, and in this case, he was a “technician,” which in this case means he was a mechanic for commercial vehicles. He completed his apprenticeship as a technician/mechanic (American terminology) in 2008 (he was 20) and worked as a commercial vehicle technician up until 2016.
Why 2016? It’s when he shattered the deadlift world record by placing a 1,102 lbs deadlift. While he lifted the barbell with great strength, he bled out of his nose and ears, and then fainted on the ground. He was hospitalized and easily recovered, cementing himself as one of the greatest strongmen of all time. He rightfully earned his nickname as, “The Beast,” in strongmen sports.
Where Eddie Hall Stands Today
Eddie Hall competed in strongmen competitions from 2007 to 2017. With a decade of incredible strongmen feats under his belt, he has decided to take on Brian Shaw in armwrestling in December of 2024. This new path allows him to apply his fast twitch muscles and strength, while not placing his body under immense pressure.
